Pearls of Wisdom: Prayer for Engaged Living I & II What puts the “Human” in “Humanistic Buddhism”? It is the willingness of Humanistic Buddhism to break out of the temple walls to be where the people are: in their homes and in their workplaces, in their public meetings and in their private moments. For this reason, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has written prayers for use in a wide variety of situations. These books of 100 prayers cover most of the situations modern Buddhists face: for a husband or for a wife, at the birth of a child or for the death of a relative, for adolescent girls and for women in distress. The disenfranchised are represented here: prayers for misled youths and for abused children, for the terminally ill and for death-row inmates. There is hope here, too: prayers for the morning, for birthdays, for the New Year. There are prayers for members of various professions, from public servants to prostitutes, from teachers to farmers. And of course, there are prayers for those who have dedicated time and resources to spreading the Dharma (the Buddha’s teachings). With this book in hand, every devotee can be a “prayer warrior,” helping to support the efforts of all in their struggles to live decent lives. Whether used by groups for corporate celebrations, or by individuals for quiet contemplation, these prayers will help round out the lives of those who pray them, as well as of those who are prayed for.
